An Essex recycling centre has been closed today (September 22) after a fire broke out. Rayleigh Recycling Centre was closed due to a fire on site.

The recycling centre is located on Castle Road. Locals have been asked to search for alternative centres if they were intending to visit today.

Love Essex said: "For the attention of Rayleigh residents and those in surrounding areas. Rayleigh Recycling Centre is currently closed due to a fire on site, so will not be open this morning (Monday 22 September).

"If you have made a booking to visit Rayleigh Recycling Centre, your booking will be accepted at a later time or at an alternative site. To find another recycling centre, visit loveessex.org/find-recycling-centre."

Site staff were hoping to reopen the site at 3pm, but it has not yet opened. Essex County Fire and Rescue Service said: "Firefighters were called to Castle Road, Rayleigh at 8.34am this morning.

"On arrival crews discovered one metal bin alight in the recycling centre. Firefighters extinguished the fire and handed the incident over to site staff by 9.20am. "
