Definitions

RACI chart is a type of responsibility matrix where relevant roles are defined on one axis, and tasks and deliverables (or decisions, depending on context) are defined on the other. As defined below, the four letters R, A, C, and I are used to indicate in what capacity a given role relates to a given task/deliverable/decision. RACI charts are most often used to clarify responsibilities of project teams, but the Service Management Program uses them for practice and service responsibilities as well.

RASCI chart is a variant that adds in a letter to represent “Support” in cases where you may need to clarify the role of supporting teams and individuals who may not otherwise have formal responsibilities. For example, a project manager or service management specialist may provide support but not be required for consultation.

RolesResponsible

A person or team responsible for correct execution of the task/deliverable/decision. Can also be the person who is Accountable.

Accountable

Only one per task/deliverable/decision. A person who has ownership of quality and the end result. Ensures adequate resourcing and participation by the Responsible and Consulted parties to complete the task/deliverable/decision.

Support

People who will provide assistance to the responsible party.

Consulted

People whose opinions are sought. Provides knowledge and information in a timely manner and with sufficient detail before a final decision or action is made by the Responsible party.

Informed

People who are kept up-to-date on progress, process execution, and quality. Often leadership or project/service stakeholders.

Guidance

You can only have one A for an item in the RACI. This ensures accountability and decision-making authority is clear.

Multiple Rs can be listed per row, but avoid using too many. Consider defining one R and adding S for others who will help out.

When listed, C and I are required, not optional. Although many people may be asked for opinions, advice, feedback, or insights on a project or initiative, do not include them if they are not required.
